Merrimore is a small home for six adults with learning disabilities and mental health. There is always a member of staff here and they sleep in so that they can help us if we need them to.

We enjoy living here because we can have a say in how our home is run, including what we eat, who works here, who lives here, how it is decorated and what we do in our spare time. We also get to learn about what we need to do to look after our home and this means we can learn about the sort of things we would need to do if we were to move out and live on our own. But we can live here for as long as we want or need to.

We are a few minutes’ walk from the sea and the shops are even nearer.

The staff help us to do as much as we can for ourselves and they do this in lots of ways. Not only do they support us to learn to do daily tasks safely and remind us about taking care of ourselves and our home, but they teach us appropriate social skills and how to have conversations with people we don’t know. They also remind and support us to make sure we are safe when we are out on our own.

We can go out when we want to and have got to know some of our neighbours well. It is fun sometimes having a chat with them over the garden wall.

We love to go out for the day with the staff, but not all of us always go and that’s ok. We have lots of ideas about places we wish to visit and the staff help us to choose. They sometimes come up with some good ideas too! This year we have been on quite a few outings and holidays and we still have more to come. As we receive help with our budgeting, we know that the staff will help us to plan what money we need for these so no one ever goes out or on holiday without enough to spend.

In the last twelve months we have had a new kitchen and bathroom and the shower room is having a makeover which is nearly finished. Then it will be the turn of our bedrooms and we can’t wait to pick the colours we want for them too. Then the lounge will be redecorated and we already have lovely new curtains ready to go up, and cushion covers to match.

We are already looking forward to Christmas and have lots of ideas about where we would like to go on holiday next year.
